My ‘tape paintings’ are inspired by popular culture, science fiction, graffiti and art history. The strange and fantastic images of comic book covers, mostly from the late sixties and early seventies, had a notable influence on me growing up. Artists like Piranesi, Giotto and Philip Guston, as well as street art, are also relevant in my efforts to portray an architecture of space that is both realistic and imaginary.
I apply tape over paint to establish sharp-edged graphics that compress subject and narrative into high altitude atmospherics. The color blue is key to these works. I try to bend space and introduce rapid scale shifts in my images to warp narrative time into a weightless, free-form experiencefor the viewer.
