Garden Partyis a series of small, vivid paintings of flora and fauna that invite the viewer to join in. The lush palette of colors found in Garden Partycapture the human interaction with the natural world. The intent of the painting is to call out moments where nature offers its bounty to the viewer.
I am drawn to the traditional elements of art -- line, shape, color, form, value, space, and texture -- as they are fully experienced by and through our senses of sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. As a visual artist, the sense of sight is primary. I am enchanted by color and fascinated with its combinations and the way light plays on forms as seen through highlights and shadows. Lines take me on a journey from my imagination to images rendered on canvas. With this awareness, I am drawn to the magic within our gardens and want to capture nature and its affect on us. Working in oils gives me the vehicle to experiment with color, shape and the tangible elements that moment in time when a flower blooms, when a cadre of ducks join you at the pool, and when a splendid iris is in full flower.
In my practice my primary focus is figurative painting with an emphasis on portraiture where I strive to capture the subject’s personality and create a sense of their presence. I seek to find that moment where the subject might come down off the wall and engage you in conversation. Yet, I always return to still life as if a return to the familiar, a place where I hope to capture the abundance and substance that surrounds me.
Life, nature, and beauty are ephemeral and fleeting, but the Garden Partyseries captures and freezes these moments and invites us to savor them.
