Back in the early 60’s, I was maybe ten years old and fishing in a local mill pond with a friend. It was fairly early in the morning with a bit of mist softening the surrounding forest. A pair of ospreys flew out of the mist and silently continued the length of the lake disappearing back into the mist. At that time, around the midpoint of the last century, ospreys, bald eagles and other large birds of prey were near extinction in New Jersey, seeing one was something to talk about! Today, seeing an osprey or bald eagle is fairly common but to a ten year old little boy almost sixty years ago it was magical. Through these paintings I’ve tried to recreate some of those moments when, out in nature, one rounds a bend and finds themselves confronted by one of those magical moments.
