Throughout the history of art there has been a glaring absence of female artists. Even today, women remain dramatically underrepresented in the art world. I began to focus on painting different women in the arts about three years ago. Initially inspired by the vintage glamour of the 1920's and then moving into succeeding decades, I created sepia-toned portraits juxtaposed against colorful wallpapered backgrounds. This series has evolved to now adorning my subjects with elaborate "crowns" and creatures, implementing my love of nature. My objective is to raise awareness of women in all of the arts and to celebrate their lives and achievements. This process has been a very personal journey of discovery for me. In researching the challenges that have shaped these women, I have found that there is a little bit of each of their stories that resonates with me as a female artist. Equally, there is a little part of myself that resides in each painting.
