After spending an afternoon painting behind Convention Hall in Cape May, I happened to hear Judy Garland’s cover of the old Vaudeville tune “Always Chasing Rainbows” on the radio as I drove home.
What an idealistic yet charming preoccupation… I thought …the pursuit of something that promises a reward so sparkling and big that you can almost taste its fruit flavors, yet by its very nature is completely unattainable…and within such melancholy … so much beautiful optimism…
I thought I might borrow that title, as it seemed so fitting for my upcoming show—literally combining a reference to the brightly colored rows of umbrellas I’d been painting with a contrasting allusion to my own constant preoccupation with the pursuit and capture of the delicious, the defiant and the elusive…
