When the world screeched to a halt, all at once she felt isolated, lost, and unsure of herself. The last yawns of winter were giving way to the first shoots of flowers breaking through the hardened soil. Stepping from her backdoor, she wandered through her young gardens and along the wooded trails feeling immersed in all the life that was gradually springing up around her. Warm summer nights returned, and with them, many winged creatures joined her on her daily adventures among the plants and flowers. Making friends in this sanctuary during these otherwise foreboding months, she grew closer to the natural world and began to uncover hidden truths within herself. A growing tingle of excitement for a deeper exploration was emerging as the hot months grew long, the stalks of her plants began to droop, and some of her closest winged friends began to migrate away with the changing breezes. As autumn chilled into winter, an inner courage was being unveiled, a new secret strength was emerging to continue the adventure further out into this brave new world. She had found the nature of the world and the beauty within. She had found herself.
I find beauty in the drama of nature, the color and texture of plant life, lush flowers, and even birds’ feathers. I am also drawn to the elaborate and flashy decorations seen in early 20thCentury films. Merging vintage images of women with vibrant natural decorations, my intention is to create fun, powerful pieces that are intended to make a statement in any room.
