I have always been impressed by the unique quality of the light in Cape May, everchanging by the atmospheric conditions of the coastal environment. The play of sunlight sparkles on the architecture, gardens and walks creating crystal clear forms of pure color and brilliance, casting shadows with precise clarity. The next moment, the light changes and the sparkle gives way to glowing luminescence. Cape May becomes wrapped in a thin veil of haze that softens the edges and seems to hover like a visiting spirit.
I enjoy trying to recreate these unique effects of the light on the subjects that attract my attention as an artist, and it has become a common theme in my work. Cape May offers me this challenge with an abundance of subjects to paint.
